How to get to Villa Borghese and the Galleria Borghese

Getting there
The park is in the Pinciano district and has no gate, so you simply walk in from whichever side you reach first. The best-known way up is the flight of steps from Piazza del Popolo to the Pincio terrace at the park’s western edge. The museum has an address, and you should use it: Piazzale Scipione Borghese 5. Searching for "Villa Borghese" will drop you somewhere in 80 hectares of park, which may be a long walk from the door you booked.

Up from Piazza del Popolo

From Piazza del Popolo, the steps climb to the Pincio terrace, and you are in the park at the top of them. It is the entrance most visitors use because it is the one they stumble on, and it arrives at the best view in the place. From there the park spreads east.

Getting to the museum door

Put Piazzale Scipione Borghese 5 into your phone, not the name of the park. I have met too many people who navigated to "Villa Borghese", arrived at a perfectly nice gravel avenue, and then had to cross a large park at speed with a timed slot ticking. The slot starts whether you are at the door or not — see how the two hours work.

Insider tip

Give yourself a margin you would find embarrassing. The reservation is for a shift, the shift is capped at 180 people, and arriving late does not extend it by a minute.

What I am not going to give you

Bus numbers, metro lines and fares change, and we have not verified any of them, so this page does not quote them. Check them on the day with whatever transport app you already trust. The address above is the fixed part.

Two destinations, one name

Worth repeating before you set off: the park needs no ticket and the museum needs a booked, timed one. If you have not read villa versus galleria, read it before you leave the hotel, and check the opening hours for the day you are going.

Book the slot you are walking to

Timed entry with an optional audio guide, €35 — more than the museum’s own €18, and a booking that exists when the official calendar is empty.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Galleria Borghese?

Piazzale Scipione Borghese 5, inside the Villa Borghese park in the Pinciano district. Navigate to that address rather than to the park name — they are not the same place.

How do I get into Villa Borghese park?

You walk in. There is no gate and no ticket, from any side, dawn to dusk. The best-known way is the steps up from Piazza del Popolo to the Pincio terrace — see what to see once you are up there.

How long before my slot should I arrive?

Early enough that a wrong turn in the park does not cost you part of the visit. The two-hour clock runs on the shift, not on your arrival — the shift timetable is here.
